Bersani's James Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Henry James has been a persistent point of reference and attention in Leo Bersani's critical trajectory. Considering both the continuities and the changes in his reading of James over the past fifty years, this brief essay asks why Henry James has played such a crucial role in Bersani's unique and evolving account of modern literature's "ethical-erotic" - and profoundly political - "project," from his earliest against-the-grain readings of realist novels and his subversions of standard models of psychoanalytic criticism through his mid-career "polemic" against the modernist "culture of redemption" to his recent efforts to rethink the nature and vocabularies of modern subjectivity, sociability, and intimacy. 2011 Project MUSE.
