  • Sera from 59 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients were studied for IgG and IgM and titers of antibodies to n-DNA detected by Farr assay and by a class specific (IgG or IgM) enzyme labeled immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA). Correlations with clinical SLE activity and renal histology were made using Spearman rank order analysis. For many patients each of the serologic parameters correlated significantly with SLE clinical activity, but only the IgG ELISA and the Farr assay for anti-n-DNA antibodies correlated significantly with active renal histology. By obviating the need for radionucleotides, the ELISA may be a preferable technique for measuring anti-n-DNA antibodies in many laboratories.
