abstract
African trypanosomes evade their mammalian host's immune system by the sequential expression of alternative surface glycoproteins. Comparison of the cDNA sequences of five antigenically distinct surface proteins and the C-terminal amino acid sequences of four additional ones demonstrates that these nine glycoproteins can be classified into two subsets based on C-terminal amino acid homologies that extend 75-105 amino acids into the protein. 1981 Nature Publishing Group.
