abstract
Over the next five years I plan to develop a productive, extramurally funded, research program that will advance orthopteran systematics and produce exciting research on Orthoptera, which includes familiar insects including grasshoppers, katydids, and crickets. My lab is currently the only research program in the U.S. that specializes in orthopteran systematics, and can train the next generation of experts in this important group of insects. I will employ state-of-art technology to advance the taxonomy of Orthoptera, use molecular data to improve our understanding of the evolutionary relationships among major orthopteran lineages, and unravel the proximate mechanisms of locust phase transformation using lab-based and field-based research program.
