Right dorsal colitis Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Right dorsal colitis is an NSAID-induced enteropathy. Like NSAID enteropathies in man, the magnitude of the problem may be underestimated among norses. Early recognition leads to improved prognosis for medical management. Often, the diagnosis is presumptive and based on assessment of clinical and clinicopathological findings and exclusion of other causes of the observed signs. Medical management entails dietary modification, restricting use of NSAIDs, reducing physiological stress and consideration for administration of selected specific medications. Surgical management may be necessary for some horses; unfortunately, surgery generally carries a poor prognosis. Early recognition and compliance with recommendations for medical management is important in attaining a successful outcome.
