abstract
The activities of several individual polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and several environmentally significant reconstituted mixtures of these compounds as inducers of aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) and ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) in rat hepatoma H-4-II E cells were determined. The observed AHH and EROD induction EC50S for the mixtures were compared with the calculated values, which were based on the summation of the relative per cent contributions of the individual components of the reconstituted PCB and PCDF mixtures. The results show that the differences between the observed and calculated EC50s for these mixtures were minimal or not significant and the data supports the use of the rat hepatoma H-4-II E cell system as a bioassay for toxic halogenated aryl hydrocarbons. 1985.
