Molecular electronics: approaching reality. Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • The analysis of single molecules acting as electronic devices is discussed. The key to the success of molecular electronics will be able to tailor the properties and behaviour of devices by alternating the composition and structure of the molecules on which they are based. The development of molecular analogs to conventional silicon-based devices such as transistors and diodes leads to smaller and higher-performance electronic circuits. It is found that the individual molecules are indirectly programmable to perform specific and more complex functions than their microelectronic counterparts.
