The Focused Section on 'Electromagnetic Devices for Precision Engineering' of the IEEE/ASME TRANSACTIONS ON MECHATRONICS (TMECH) selected research papers out of the received 46 papers, stimulate research and technology breakthrough in this area as well as open up niche applications. A paper by Hu et al. addressed the critical design aspect of electromagnetic actuators, in which the description of magnetic field distribution is important. Komori and Hirakawa developed a linear microactuator based on a new driving method that composes of a mobile micro platform weighing 0.15 g and permanent magnets. A research paper showing an interesting method to estimate the relative position and orientation of a magnetic sensor in 3-D space with respect to a cylindrical-shaped permanent magnet in motion is also included. Karutz et al. proposed a concept coined as magnetically levitated two-level motor (ML2M) and Verma et al. proposed a 6-DOF magnetic levitated system that can achieve better than 5-nm resolution with 2-nm rms position noise.
