abstract
A general mathematical description of the non-linear viscoelastic behavior of ligaments and tendons is presented. After simplification for the special case of uniaxial extension, the idea of microstructural change is introduced. This formulation involves the use of two different constitutive equations to model the stress-strain curve in the toe and linear regions. The model constants are determined using a curve-fit of experimental data from tensile tests of a human patellar tendon. The parameters thus determined are used in the model to predict the stress resulting from cyclic elongation.
