Wave propagation due to impact through layered polymer composites: Part 2-Planar problems Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • 2015 Elsevier Ltd. In this paper we study the response of a rectangular layered composite viscoelastic plate subjected to impact on one face of the plate. A two network theory which is based on the maximization of entropy production is used to obtain the constitutive equations governing the response of the material and a finite volume numerical scheme is used to solve the resulting equations. The propagation of kinetic energy towards the face opposite to that which is impacted and the interaction at the interfaces are studied for six different layering sequences of Polycarbonate (PC) and Polyurea (PU) namely pure PC, pure PU, bilayer (PU/PC and PC/PU) and trilayer (PU/PC/PU and PC/PU/PC). The layering sequence of PC/PU/PC had the lowest energy arriving at the opposite face of all the cases considered.
