abstract
In this paper we develop a model, within a general framework that has been developed to describe the response of dissipative systems, for the strain induced degradation of polymeric solids, due to scission. The theory can be generalized to include degradation due to ultraviolet radiation, oxygen diffusion etc., by incorporating an appropriate form for the rate of dissipation associated with these processes. We study the simple shear and pure bending of such degrading polymer beams. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
