Design simulation in post-construction commissioning of new buildings.Design simulation or calibrated simulation for on-going commissioning.Calibrated simulation for existing building commissioning.Simulation to evaluate new control code. The majority of the chapter is devoted to the use of calibrated simulation in the process of commissioning existing buildings and the use of calibrated simulation in the follow-up on-going commissioning process. The existing building commissioning (EBCx) process is introduced and a detailed description of a process for calibrating simulations that is suitable for use in the EBCx process follows. The calibration process is further clarified with two case study examples.A case study in which off-line simulation was used in the EBCx process to aid in diagnosis of operating problems and predict the savings potential of these problems is presented followed by a case study in which on-line calibrated simulation was used to track the performance of a building and detect the appearance of an operational problem and diagnose a change in the outside air pre-treatment temperature as the cause of the problem is presented. Both of these uses are beginning to find application in the field today and are likely to become increasingly important in the next decade. This chapter introduces the concept of whole building simulation for operational operation and describes four different post-design uses of simulation for operational optimization:
