abstract
A finite element model based on the Navier-Stokes equations is developed to simulate flows of fluids inside mold cavities. The penalty function method is used to include the continuity equation as a constraint on the velocity field. The location of liquid-air interface, defined by a pseudo-concentration value, during the filling process is predicted by solving for the movement of the interface due to forced convection. Sample numerical examples are presented to verify the accuracy the formulation and the computational model developed herein.
