NOTE ON MIXED VARIATIONAL PRINCIPLES FOR INITIAL-VALUE PROBLEMS Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Mixed variational principles are developed for a general class of linear initial-value problems of parabolic as well as hyperbolic type. The Euler equations are the governing differential equations of the problem as opposed to equivalent integro-differential equations of Gurtin's method. Examples are given for the heat conduction and the wave equations. 1975 Oxford University Press.
