abstract
The kinematic theories used to model thick composite laminates is reviewed, and the authors' recent research in the development of a robust computational procedure for accurate determination of local stress fields in thick composites is presented. The layerwise theory, originally proposed by the first author, forms the basis for a variable displacement finite element model. The variable displacement finite elements contain several different types of assumed displacement fields, including the displacement fields of the equivalent single layer as well as the layerwise theories.
