Measuring the Value of the Ethnic Connection: Expatriate Travelers from Australia to Sri Lanka Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • This article uses the input-output technique to assess the impact of a particular target market on a particular destination, namely expatriate Sri Lankans resident in Australia, traveling back to their country of birth temporarily. The ethnic connection is particularly important for destinations such as Sri Lanka whose tourism industry has been affected by civil disturbance. We discovered that ethnically motivated travelers spend relatively small amounts on accommodation and a larger but still relatively small amount on transport. They do, however, spend substantial amounts in the retail and wholesale sectors, and the average length of stay is relatively long.
