The test results presented for various types of smooth seals consist of leakage data, axial pressure gradients and radial and tangential force coefficients. Measured axial pressure gradients yield friction factor data which are higher than Yamada's earlier measured results. The decrease in friction factors with increasing Reynolds numbers is more rapid than would be expected from pipe data. Measured stiffness and damping coefficients compared favourably with theoretical predictions. Doubling the radial clearance, yields an approximate 40% decrease in the stiffness and damping coefficients.
