Mobile Effects on Access and Exposure Chapter uri icon

abstract

  • AbstractThis chapter reviews global and domestic patterns of internet access and mobile use. It explores wired and mobile internet access and reach by demographics, across countries, and across time. The data show not only the increasing use of mobile devices, but a growing dependence on mobile-only internet access among many. In conclusion, this chapter posits a trade-off between breadth and depth when it comes to exposure to digital news and political information, wherein mobile technology reaches a large audience but with great limitations on the depth of exposure. Broadly, these data offer support for the physical and cognitive access (PCA) framework.
