Studying Technological Change and Media Effects Chapter uri icon

abstract

  • AbstractIn order to go beyond the study of how changing media technologies affect exposure and move to the study of how they affect post-exposure information processing, we offer an innovative methodological approach that leverages lab experiments and physiological measures. Notably we use technology that permits the measure of both eye movement, skin conductance levels, and heart rate variability. This approach permits us to test the mechanism that explains patterns of attention and learning on mobile devices, cognitive effort, and measure attention unobtrusively outside of participant awareness. In this chapter we set forth our general approach, as well as offer methodological details for subsequent chapters.
