SOME IMPLICATIONS OF TCM FOR OPTICAL DIRECT-DETECTION CHANNELS Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • We consider the optical direct-detection channel and show how simple trellis coded modulation (TCM) can be used to improve performance or increase throughput (in bits per second) without bandwidth expansion or performance loss. In fact, a modest performance gain can be achieved. Although the approach can be used with other signal constellations, we concentrate on signals derived from the pulse-position modulation (PPM) format by allowing overlap. Theoretical motivation for using this signal set, known as overlapping PPM (OPPM), was recently given by Bar David et al. who showed a capacity gain when overlap is introduced. 1989 IEEE
