OVERPARAMETERIZED SYSTEMS IN ASTRODYNAMICS Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • The most common way to model the motion of dynamical systems is through minimal coordinate descriptions. However, sometimes redundant coordinate descriptions are more suitable. Examples in astrodynamics include the Euler parameters for attitude dynamics and the orbital elements of the two-body problem. This paper investigates issues involved with these descriptions. For these systems the mass matrix is singular, leading to alternative definitions of the number of degrees of freedom. Additionally two categories of constraint functions can be considered: physical constraint forces and selective constraints that allow selection of a unique set of generalized accelerations.
