Tackling Congestion in Dallas Using Managed Lanes Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • A flexible, innovative, and comprehensive managed lane (ML) system is developed in north Texas region in a bid to combat the road congestion problem. The region is currently focusing on three large managed lane projects for implementation, which include 1-635 West, North Tarrant Express-I-820, and the DFW Connector-SH 114/SH 121. A 19-point managed lane policy was adopted aimed to establish a framework for operations of all permanent managed lanes in the region and the project revenue will be used to leverage the funding for a significant portion of the project's construction costs. Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) conducted a survey in Houstan and Dallas of travelers regarding their interest and potential use of MLs found that 71% of the users were interested in using MLs. An initial examination of survey results indicated that 69.5% of Dallas respondents selected a tolled managed lane option at least once.
