A disc storage system (10) includes a rotating disc (12) and a transducer. The transducer is carried on a slider (36) which is supported by an armature (32). The armature (32) is used to move the slider radially across the disc (12) surface whereby information may be read from or written to the disc (12) surface with the transducer. The slider (36) includes an air bearing surface which faces the disc (12) surface. As the disc (12) rotates, the air bearing surface (36) causes the slider to 'fly' over the disc (12) surface. Pads (118) are provided on the air bearing surface to improve operational characteristics of the system (10).
