Laser surface processing in the ultra violet for tribological applications in metals and ceramics Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Surface modification using ion beams and infrared laser light has proven to be of benefit to tribological systems in a number of applications. We will describe the use of excimer laser light in the ultraviolet for surface alloying of metal and ceramic systems with excellent tribological results. Specifically, we have observed reduced friction in dry sliding conditions and a change in wear processes resulting in greatly reduced surface damage. We interpret these results in light of changes in the microstructural mechanical, and tribochemical properties of the surface.
