Introduction to Food Animal Pharmacotherapy Chapter uri icon

abstract

  • Summary This chapter focuses on what the pharmacist needs to know when dispensing drugs to food animals in order to maintain a safe food supply. To start with, pharmacists dispensing drugs intended for food animals may not be familiar with some of the terms used in the production animal industry. The chapter lists terms that might be encountered by a pharmacist. The pharmacist can play an important role in ensuring appropriate food animal regulations are followed when dispensing drugs for these animals. The chapter also discusses factors that contribute to differences in drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination in food animal species, particularly ruminants. The vast majority of drugs approved for use in food animals are antibiotics or antiparasitics. The chapter further lists routes of administration that are used for food animals, many of which will likely be unfamiliar to pharmacists.
