Early demineralization caused by caries will change the refractive index of teeth and increase the backscattering coefficient.A novel optical coherence tomography(OCT) system was used to diagnose the dental caries. With this system, the OCT images of in vitro normal tooth and the caries were obtained quickly and properly, and it was firstly found that the backscattering coefficient of the caries tooth is several times more than the normal tooth by comparing the caries region with the normal region of the in vitro tooth. This method can be used for the diagnosis of early dental caries caused by the dental decays, therefore has great merits for the clinical diagnosis of early dental caries.
