Breaking down the walls: challenges and lessons learned in interdisciplinary research Chapter uri icon

abstract

  • The complex challenges we face in addressing the environmental health impacts of climate change and the more frequent and severe disasters attributable to it require an interdisciplinary research approach that is strongly informed by thoughtful engagement of affected communities. While the physical (e.g., inches of rainfall) and economic (e.g., insured losses) costs of disasters may be relatively easy to quantify, building community resilience requires a better understanding of impacts across all aspects of society. The integration of methods and measures from across multiple disciplines can bring together data needed to form the foundations of community resilience, inform policy development, and generate support for action-oriented planning and design.
