Detailed dynamics of a complex photochemical reaction: Cis–trans photoisomerization of stilbene

Detailed simulations of the cis to trans photoisomerization of stillbene following a laser pulse with a FWHM of 150 fs were performed. After this pulse produced electronic excitations from HOMO to LUMO, the vinyl and vinyl-phenyl bonds, respectively, underwent an increase and decrease in length. Two principal avoided crossings were found for the HOMO and LUMO levels.
