For a semi-infinite free-electron model with a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the surface, we show that χds=-χps3, where χds and χps are, respectively, the surface corrections to the Landau diamagnetism and the Pauli paramagnetism. The total surface contribution to the susceptibility is χs=(23)(μB2π2)A[γ(kF)-π4], where γ(kF) is the phase shift for kz=kF. Since γ=π4 and γ(kF)>γ, the surface contributions to the magnetic susceptibility and electronic heat capacity are positive. © 1975 The American Physical Society.
