SIMPLE MODEL FOR SURFACE SPECIFIC-HEATS Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Surface specific heats have been calculated with a simple model in which the dispersion curves for the acoustic modes are represented by sine functions, the optical modes are represented by Einstein oscillators, the parameters are fitted to bulk data, and the effect of the surface is estimated from the number of neighbors that the surface atoms are missing. The results are in good agreement with those of detailed lattice-dynamics calculations, indicating that rather accurate calculations are possible for average properties such as the surface specific heat without a detailed knowledge of the surface phonon spectrum.
