Natural gas is rapidly gaining ground with its reputation as an alternative environmentally friendly fuel source. Currently major gas exporting countries are already exporting to major markets in Asia and Europe. Natural gas can be transported in a gaseous, liquid or solid phase; however, the infrastructure needed to transport gas via pipelines or in its liquid form as LNG is expensive.
For smaller countries which do not have sustainable field sources of their own, LNG may not be an economically feasible option. However, these countries are still prepared to invest in gas if an appropriate delivery and reception method can be developed.
This paper will explore the different means in which gas can be transported and attempts to determine the best economic form of delivery to nations without the necessary infrastructure. It will compare six different methods of transport of natural gas: LNG, PNG, CNG, GTS, GTL and GTW via the storage capacity, economical distance and simple payback period to find the most feasible method in terms of transporting to consuming nations.
