abstract
Generation of the third harmonic of unamplified 30-fs pulses of Cr:forsterite laser in a holey fiber is observed for the first time. Cross-phase modulation leads to the spectral broadening of third-harmonic pulses coming out of the fiber. This effect suggests the way of controlling the chirp of the third harmonic produced in a holey fiber and allows nonlinear-optical processes, enhanced in microstructure fibers due to the high degree of light localization in the fiber core, to be employed for frequency conversion with simultaneous pulse compression.
