Dialectics of conservation, extractives, and Ugandas land rush Chapter uri icon

abstract

  • This chapter examines land rights abuses linked to the prevailing land rush in the Albertine Graben of Uganda, and seeks to investigate their consequences for the socio-ecological system in this region and the implications for biodiversity conservation in the Murchison Falls conservation area in western Uganda. Land rush is occurring at a very large scale in areas where extractives have been discovered, and where energy demand has increased, severely affecting the socio-ecological system of these areas in many cases. The chapter describes oil and gas exploration and biodiversity status in the Ugandan Albertine Graben and an empirical case study on land rights abuses, scale and actors in the Albertine region of Uganda. The Ugandan government has confirmed plans to build a refinery at Kabaale in Buseruka sub-county, Hoima district, and is currently soliciting for a company to construct it under publicprivate sector partnership.
