abstract
The most general higher derivative Yang-Mills actions of the type (F2 + 2F4) which are globally supersymmetric up to order 2 in six- and ten-dimensional spacetimes are given. The F4-terms turn out to occur in the combination 2[tr F4 - 1 4 (tr F2)2], where the trace is over the Lorentz indices. This result sgrees with the low energy limit of the open superstrin g in ten dimensions, where is the string tension. Surprisingly, the transformation rules of the Yang-Mills multiplet receive order 2 corrections even in the off-shell formulation. For the case of abelian Yang-Mills group, the action is expressed in Born-Infeld form with a metric generically given by (1+2F2+). 1987.
