abstract
The general quadratic force field has been determined for the vibrations of CH3OOCH3 and CD3OOCD3. Twenty-one non-zero force constants were used to fit the forty-two assigned fundamental frequencies, a number of which were revised in this work. Several of the vibrational modes, especially those for the deuteride, were found to be strongly coupled. The oxygen-oxygen stretching motion, in particular, was found to be highly coupled for both molecules. Because of this, the O-O stretching frequency cannot be considered to be a reliable measure of the oxygen-oxygen bond strength. 1972.
