This paper explores the altitude error from vertical refractive index gradients in non-standard atmospheres. Parameter spaces associated with airborne free space optical communication, directed energy and atmospheric LiDAR are explored. For the case of airborne free space optical communication, a simple yet accurate estimation of the deflection is obtained through dimensional analysis. Additional altitude errors were obtained by adding thermal perturbations which produced additional errors ranging from mm to cm.
