A Frequency Selective Surface With Miniaturized Elements for Chemical Sensing

© 2019 IEEE. In this paper, a bandpass miniaturized frequency selective surface made up of wire grid and loop element is employed for sensing. With a material under test between periodic arrays of wire grid and loop elements, the sensing capability of this structure to detect air, ethanol, and methanol in X band is demonstrated through numerical simulation. The structure can sense ϵ′ and ϵ″ variations as small as 0.4 and 0.55, respectively. Moreover, the maximum detectable ϵ′ and ϵ″ are 21.2 and 16.1, respectively.
