The relation between the crack path and the resistance to ductile crack growth is considered for materials where voids initiate from two populations of void nucleating particles: larger particles that result in void nucleation at an early stage and smaller particles that require large strains to nucleate voids. The finite deformation finite element mode I small scale yielding calculations are based on the dynamic principle of virtual work. The focus is on identifying key features of the void nucleating particle distribution that govern the crack path and the crack growth resistance, and the extent the void nucleating particle distribution can be engineered to give rise to crack paths that lead to improved ductile crack growth resistance.
