The competition between failure by shear banding versus void coalescence is investigated in Mg alloys by means of experiments and computational modeling. First, we evidence an effect of stress triaxiality on the microscopic mechanisms and macroscopic mode of fracture in two alloys. Next, we employ a micromechanics based model to rationalize intergranular ductile fracture in a rare-earth Mg alloy as well as the fracture loci of two alloys. Finally, we investigate conditions under which shear failure can be simulated in initially round specimens, reminiscent of observations in some Mg alloys with pronounced plastic anisotropy.
