abstract
A novel multi-scale carbon fiber reinforced polymer nanocomposite laminate, with strategically incorporated carbon nanotubes at 0.2 weight percent, is studied for improvements in strength, stiffness and fatigue life under both tension-tension fatigue and tension-compression fatigue loadings. Fluorine XD-grade nanotubes are incorporated into the carbon fabric prior to high temperature vacuum assited resin transfer molding lamination through a spraying process. The influence of the functionalized carbon nanotubes on the evolution of damage and the resistance to catastrophic failure is credited for the demonstrated improvements in mechanical properties. A fractographic analysis is conducted to better understand the nanotube reinforcement mechanisms, including light and scanning electron microscopy.
