abstract

  • This chapter presents a design procedure and techniques of a wireless intraoral tonguecomputer interface, by following the signal path from the tongue to the external receiver, using the intraoral version of the tongue drive system (iTDS) as a practical example. The tongue is well suited for an assistive technology (AT) because it is composed of strong and dexterous muscle fibers that do not easily fatigue as long as they are not required to apply force. The intraoral device holds a unique position to efficiently interact with intraoral organs and is recently being developed for several purposes such as blind navigation, tongue stimulation, artificial larynx, and drug diffusion. TDS is a tongue-operated, minimally invasive, unobtrusive, and wireless AT that infers users' intentions by detecting their voluntary tongue motion and translating them into user-defined commands. Sensor technology is necessary to detect tongue movement.
