MICROPROCESSOR ALGORITHM FOR OVERCURRENT PROTECTION OF DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS. Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • The algorithm provides all standard functions of electromechanical relays with pickup and time dial settings adjustable from a remote dispatch terminal. The time-current characteristic curve may be any shape desired by replacing or reprogramming a programmable-read-only-memory, PROM, integrated circuit. In this way coordination may be done with complete flexiblity. In the condition of a fault, a timed trip signal may be set to a breaker without overreach or undue reset time. The same signal may cause a full report of the fault to be logged. This report will have access to many cycles of prefault as well as postfault data. If deemed necessary by the magnitude of fault current, an instantaneous trip signal will be set with great speed, but filtering any current spikes which might occur. The microprocessor is expandable to provide other functions or may communicate with other digital devices as the system becomes more automated.
