In this chapter, the interactions between frequency-dependent wave energy dissipation mechanisms and nonlinear phase-resolving spectral models are discussed. Dissipation due to wave breaking, wave-mud interaction and wave interaction with vegetation are outlined, and formulations, which can be directly included into phase-resolving spectral models, are detailed. These interactions are considered to be one-way (since the waves at most weakly affect the nature of the dissipative mechanism) and are potentially limited in application; however they are instructive in demonstrating the effect of dissipation on nonlinear wave evolution and can eventually guide development of phase-averaged formulations to enhance present operational models.
