Wave equation analysis of a vibratory hammer-driven pile Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • 1987 Offshore Technology Conference. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the use of the vibratory hammer for pile driving and pile extraction. There has also been recent interest in utilizing vibratory hammers for offshore applications, especially in the installation of conductor piles. Because of the increased use of this hammer, there is a need for an analytical method to model the system and to evaluate the effects of various parameters involved in the vibratory driving process. This paper describes one such model, using the wave equation. This solution is available on a microcomputer. Predictions obtained from this program are compared with the results obtained from instrumented pile driving tests performed in San Diego, California. The paper discusses the effects of the various parameters on vibratory pile driving including pile characteristics, soil resistance, eccentric weights, driving frequency, the non-vibrating weight and the isolation spring which connects the non-vibrating weight to the driver.
