The standard next generation matrix approach for calculating the basic reproduction number, an important parameter in understanding the evolution and prevention of infections, suffers from some assumptions that are not always met in real-world systems. In this talk, we explore extensions through two discrete-time infectious disease models, a SIR and an ISA model, and the different behaviors that arise.
