abstract
Geologic models tend to include more irregular geometries due to the fact that, fundamentally, they are based on relatively simple flow geometries. To resolve this, a new upscaling formulation especially suited to upscaling from irregularly shaped regions and emphasizes on 3D permeability is introduced. Transmissibility is derived using a fundamental construction which is guaranteed to give no negative values. Moreover, a new pinched-out cells treatment which regularizes the vertical non-nearest neighbor connections is suggested and Peaceman's well PI equations are generalized to inclined wells, full tensor permeability, and computational cells with arbitrary numbers of faces.
