abstract
Supported Ag/Al2O3 catalysts were synthesized by impregnation of Ag nitrate onto an alpha-Al2O3 sponge support and subsequent calcination to decompose the nitrate. The supported Ag/Al2O3 catalysts were characterized in the operando spectroscopic mode with time-resolved Raman spectroscopy and online mass spectrometry. The operando spectroscopic measurements were conducted during the catalyst synthesis stage as well as ethylene epoxidation reaction. Calcined supported Ag/Al2O3 catalysts exhibit Raman vibrations of Ag=O, Ag-O-Ag and AgnO functionalities as well as carbonaceous deposits during ethylene epoxidation. The effect of different promoters and reaction conditions on the nature of the surface oxygen species and catalytic performance will be discussed.
