OXIDATION OF C2 HYDROCARBONS ON Ag(110). Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • The interactions of C//2H//2, C//2H//4, and C//2H//6 with oxygen atoms adsorbed on a Ag(110) surface were examined under UHV conditions. No reactions of either ethylene or ethane were observed for exposures of up to 300L when these gases were adequately purified before introduction into the vacuum system. In contrast, acetylene reacted efficiently with adsorbed oxygen to form H//2O and a surface acetylide. Following acetylene adsorption on the oxygen dosed surface at 150 K, acetylene desorbed at 310 K, leaving acetylide species on the surface in a 1:1 ratio to the number of oxygen atoms initially adsorbed.
