abstract
The formation of magnesium nitrides on the Mg(0001) surface by nitrogen ion implantation at room temperature was confirmed by XPS. Oxygen adsorption on the surfaces implanted with nitrogen to different extents, monitored by AES, demonstrated that oxygen adsorption and reaction occurred only with incompletely nitrided sites. In contrast, XPS and AES data showed that the magnesium nitride films were readily attacked by H2O, forming magnesium oxides, hydroxides, oxynitrides and possibly NH3. 1988.
