FUNCTIONALLY GRADED CERAMIC BASED MATERIALS USING ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING: REVIEW AND PROGRESS Chapter uri icon

abstract

  • 2016 The American Ceramic Society. Functionally graded materials (FGMs) have been much sought after for use in multifunctional integrated structures. Manufacturing of these FGMs, however, remains a major technological challenge to date, especially with ceramic materials. Both ceramic-ceramic and ceramic-metal FGMs suffer from issues such as mismatch in thermal properties and improper bonding between individual layers. Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies open up exciting new possibilities in design and fabrication of FGMs with ceramic materials. This paper critically reviews the state-of-the-art in this area and provides some perspectives for future work using binder jetting 3D printing processes.
